NSERC ISSNet 2012 Workshop held in Kingston in April

May 24, 2012:  NSERC ISSNet 2012 Workshop held in Kingston in April

The fourth annual NSERC ISSNet Workshop was hosted at the Residence Inn by Marriott, Kingston Water’s Edge in Kingston, Ontario from Tuesday, April 24 to Friday, April 27, 2012.  An average of 78 people attended during each of the three days.  Participants included ISSNet faculty researchers, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, government and industry representatives, and members of the Board of Advisors and the Scientific Advisory Board.

The Poster Session, a feature added to the Workshop program in 2010, was well received with fifteen posters presented.  This year a vote for best poster was added.  In total, 50 votes were tallied which resulted in the need for a tie-breaking decision, the winner taking home a PlayBook provided by ISSNet industry partner, Research In Motion.
During the Wednesday and Thursday sessions, ISSNet faculty researchers provided a total of 13 research talks of varying lengths, interspersed among five one-hour talks presented by invited speakers from industry, academia and government.

Friday, the final day of the workshop, was dedicated to student presentations and 2 invited discussion panels.  The panels, consisting of recent graduates who are now employed in academia, industry or government, had one hour each to explore and share insights on the transition from graduate studies to the work force.

Comments received at the conclusion of the Workshop included:  “I had the opportunity to catch up with colleagues [from] across Canada…to discuss how our work may form common links.”  “We found two possible participants for our study…this workshop was a God send.”  “I hope to give at least two talks at other ISSNet universities this year as a result of networking that took place during the workshop.”  These comments, and others, would indicate that the Workshop once again met the objective from the original proposal to “provide an opportunity for investigators and their students to exchange research results and plan new collaborations.”

Planning is underway for the next NSERC ISSNet Workshop to be held in Victoria in April 2013.
