July 22 -27, 2012: Fourth NSERC ISSNet Summer School

NSERC ISSNet hosted its fourth Annual Summer School July 22-27, 2012 at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia.  Over 50 participants from all eight ISSNet partner universities attended.  ISSNet Co-investigators, as well as national and international subject matter experts from academia and industry covered topics including Traffic Mining, Canadian Privacy Law, An Introduction to Experimental Security, Modern Operating Systems Security, Visualization, Security & Systems Admins, and Automated Analysis of Information and Social Media Data.  ISSNet members are invited to go to /2012_summer_school for full details and to view presentation slides.

July 11, 2012: NSERC ISSNet Smartphone Security and Privacy Workshop

On April 16, 2012, NSERC ISSNet hosted the Smartphone Security and Privacy Workshop at Carleton University, under the leadership of Dr. Sonia Chiasson.  Thirty-five academic, government, and industry participants from Carleton, the University of Toronto, Communications Security Establishment Canada, and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada participated in the one-day event.

Dr. Serge Egelman, Postdoctoral Research Associate at University of California, Berkeley gave the keynote address, “Designing a Choice Architecture for Mobile Device Security”.  Several ISSNet graduate students had the opportunity to present their on-going research and receive feedback from the audience.  Research topics included application permission models, process scheduling, and user authentication, among others. In addition to the formal presentations, participants also benefited from the many informal discussion and networking opportunities throughout the day.
