April 26 – 30, 2010Second NSERC ISSNet Workshop
The second NSERC ISSNet Workshop was hosted at the Albert at Bay Suites Hotel in Ottawa from Monday, April 26 to Friday, April 30, 2010.  An average of 70 people attended during each of the three days of the ISSNet workshop.  ISSNet co-investigators, postdoctoral fellows, as well as PhD, masters and undergraduate students, and government and industry representatives, members of the Board of Advisors and the Scientific Advisory Board were included in the Workshop.

ISSNet co-investigators, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students, representing all of the partner universities, presented on-going research on the three themes, “Network-oriented Security,” “Software Systems-oriented Security,” and “Human-oriented Security.”  The respective co-investigators, or their designate facilitated the sessions.  Three invited speakers from industry and government discussed their work and potential directions for future research.
A poster session featuring seventeen posters was co-chaired by postdoctoral fellows Sonia Chiasson and Gunes Kayacik.  Feedback suggests that the poster session will likely become a regular feature at the workshops.
A half-day workshop on “Networking,” was provided by Mathematics of Information Technology and Complex Systems (MITACS) through their Skills Training and Entrepreneurship Program (STEP).
Comments received at the conclusion of the Workshop included that the event was, “a good opportunity to meet with professors and fellow researchers in related field,” “a good balance between workshops and networking,” and “nicely paced for absorbing all the information.”  These comments would indicate that the Workshop met the objective in the original proposal to “provide an opportunity for investigators and their students to exchange research results and plan new collaborations.”

Planning is underway for the third NSERC ISSNet Workshop to be held in downtown Toronto in April 2011.

April 26-30, 2010: NSERC ISSNet Second Annual Workshop, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

NSERC ISSNet is pleased to host the second annual workshop April 26 – 30, 2010 in Ottawa.  The overwhelming attendance at last year’s event was evidence of the quality of the speakers and the value of the research in Internet security being conducted by ISSNet researchers.

In addition to invited speakers; this year to include Michael Brown, Director, Security Product Manager, Research in Motion (RIM), and Robert Gordon, Chief, National Cyber Security Strategy Initiative, Public Safety Canada (PSC); ISSNet graduate students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty researchers will talk about the research completed in year two of the network and participate in presentations and discussions about the projects that are currently underway.

Two new features are being added to the workshop this year.  First, a poster session to give students the opportunity to showcase their research will be facilitated by Drs. Sonia Chiasson and Gunes Kayacik, two of ISSNet’s postdoctoral fellows.  In addition, ISSNet is working in collaboration with the Mathematics of Information Technology and Complex Systems (MITACS) Skills Training and Entrepreneurship Program (STEP) to present a half-day workshop entitled “Effective Networking,” which will offer the opportunity to develop networking skills in a real time environment.

NSERC ISSNet members are invited to visit the members’ resource pages of the Web site for additional information.
